Cooking with the Bible

Preparing biblical foods is not only a wonderful group activity, but also an open gate to life in ancient Israel. As you dip the pita bread you have just baked into olive oil and the hyssop spice you have just made, you will taste the staple food of our ancestors. As you sample the wheat kernels you have roasted over an open fire, you will enjoy the "fast food" that Boaz offered Ruth while she was gleaning in his grainfields. As you cut a fig branch whose sap will curdle milk for your cheese, you will be practicing the way of the shepherds in the land flowing with milk and honey. As you gather wild plants to make a tasty salad, you will be emulating our ancestors' survival mode in the winter, when there is no ripe fruit.
