A New Name For Our Newsletter
SHORASHIM
We’ve changed our name! In Hebrew, our new name, Neot Kedumim Shorashim, means “Neot Kedumim Roots”.
When we established the reserve nearly 40 years ago, the name Neot Kedumim was chosen deliberately. The word “neot” means places of beauty. We find this word in Psalm 23: “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures.” Those beautiful green pastures are called “neot” in the Psalm.
In Hebrew, the word “kedem” means past. But in the Hebrew language, many words can have opposite meanings, depending on their context.
For example, we all know that the word “shalom” means both hello and goodbye (and peace). Likewise, the word “kedumim” has a Hebrew root which indicates both the past and forward movement, as in the word ‘kadimah’.
The Hebrew word for roots is “shorashim”. It seemed fitting to rename our newsletter “Neot Kedumim Shorashim” to underscore the idea that at the world’s only biblical landscape reserve, we look to the past while planting our roots in a place of beauty to ensure a strong future.
